Quick and Easy healthy baby muffins: Carrot Cake Muffin Dots
Quick, Easy & Full Of Goodness
Like all great inventions, the inspiration for these healthy baby muffins struck out of pure necessity: I needed a freezer-friendly, quick, easy snack that travels well and doesn’t make a whole lot of mess.
Ah-ha! Homemade muffins for babies!
Have you ever given an 11-month-old a whole normal-sized muffin? Don’t. The amount of chaos that ensued was impressive. I doubt she actually really ate any, but the dog certainly got a good share of hairy carpet muffin.
So, I ended up taking another muffin, breaking it into tiny little pieces, and putting it in her snack cup. Much better! But who has time for that every day? Hence — the muffin dots!
Just like normal grown-up sized muffins, and like almost all of my baby muffin recipes, these mini muffins can easily be customized to suit your baby or toddler’s dietary needs — or just to use whatever you have lying around in your fridge or pantry!

baby Muffins have Endless Flavor Combinations and Substitions to suit your needs
I chose to make these Carrot Cake Muffin Dots mostly because that’s what I had on hand, and when nap time and inspiration to bake strike at the same time, well — there’s no time to go to the store!
Here are some substitution and flavor combination ideas to inspire your own batch of baby led weaning muffins:
Naturally Sweet
These sugar-free baby muffins are naturally sweetened with overripe bananas and unsweetened applesauce — no added sugar needed!
I always keep a stash of overripe frozen bananas ready for baking. Other fruits you can use to naturally sweeten your muffins include pureed dates or figs.
Unsweetened coconut or mashed sweet potato also work, though they won’t be quite as sweet.
But if your baby, like my almost 1-year-old, has never had processed sugar, they won’t miss it!Fruit & Veggie Add-Ins
For this healthy muffin recipe for babies, I added shredded carrots, zucchini, and cinnamon for a “carrot cake” vibe, but the combinations are truly endless.
Use fresh or frozen berries (for toddler versions — berries can be juicy!), mint leaves, fresh grated ginger, mashed sweet potato, pureed tropical fruits, unsweetened coconut, cacao nibs, freeze-dried fruits, spinach, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg — basically, whatever tiny bits of leftover fruits and veggies you have on hand!Gluten-Free Mini Muffin Dots
I used all-purpose flour, but you can easily swap in gluten-free flour to make gluten-free baby muffins.
Baby led weaning: When Is my baby ready for Mini Muffins?
Are you considering introducing your little one to the exciting world of solid foods through baby-led weaning? One common question that often arises is, “When is my baby ready for mini muffins?” In the journey of baby-led weaning, the introduction of finger foods plays a pivotal role in developing your baby’s self-feeding skills and exploring various tastes and textures. Mini muffins can be an excellent choice for this stage, providing a soft and manageable option for those tiny fingers.
Typically, between 8 and 10 months old, babies start showing readiness for more textured foods:
Sitting up unassisted
Good hand-eye coordination
Curiosity about self-feeding
Mini muffins are the perfect soft finger food for this stage — easy to hold and chew, introducing your baby to exciting new flavors and textures.
When choosing a baby muffin recipe, focus on healthy baby muffins made with grated fruits, veggies, and wholesome ingredients to support their nutrition. Always supervise your baby during meals for a safe and positive experience. Adding baby muffins to your baby-led weaning journey is a fun, nutritious way to support self-feeding skills and make snack time delicious!

Whether you’re packing a snack for daycare, heading to the park, or simply trying to survive a busy afternoon at home, these baby led weaning muffins are always ready to save the day.

I’m always looking for baby snack ideas that travel well with minimal mess.

Notes
I HATE grating stuff! To easily finely grate anything, roughly chop your fruits veggies, cheese, etc and place in a food processor. Pulse a couple of times and viola! Finely grated whatever!
HOW TO STORE: These mini muffins freeze great for up to 3 months. To thaw, simply leave them at room temperature for an hour or so, or simply pop them in the microwave for a couple of seconds.
