Easy Melt-in-Your-Mouth Dairy-Free Baby Puffs: I Can’t Believe It’s Not Cheese!
Quick and easy healthy baby and toddler snacks
When it comes to what makes the perfect easy toddler snack or baby finger food, for me, it has to fulfill three criteria to earn a spot on my weekly baby snack rotation, and these melt-in-your-mouth baby puffs do just that:
-
It must be super quick and easy to make with no special ingredients, and I should be able to easily swap out some of the ingredients to make different flavor combinations according to what’s hiding in the corners of my crisper drawer.
-
It has to be a shelf-stable snack that transports well and doesn’t need to be refrigerated or heated up. Basically, I need something I can dump in my purse or diaper bag and just leave there for a couple of days.
-
It must be healthy and incorporate as many vitamins and nutrients as possible, while still being yummy enough for them to keep wanting more. I love baby food ideas that include some unique ingredients they likely don’t eat very often. This helps me feel like I am exposing them to all sorts of different flavors and nutrients.
And that’s it! I’m not a snack snob, and I really don’t want to spend hours making treats that mostly end up crushed in car seats or fed to dogs. All I want is a quick and easy homemade baby snack that I can take with me anywhere thats also pretty healthy and as a bonus exposes them to different foods or tastes they might not eat very often. And these diary and gluten free ‘cheese’ puffs deliver on all fronts as great baby finger foods or for easy toddler snacks to take with you everywhere!

Substitute Ingredients for Dairy-Free and Gluten-Free Baby Puffs
How to Substitute 1/4 Cup Nutritional Yeast:
- Any type of flour – almond, gluten free, all-purpose, oat. Really almost anything you have on hand will work!
- Cornstarch
- Freeze dried fruit powders
- Peanut butter Powder
- Milk Powder
- Dry Baby Formula – great for smaller babies!
How To Substitute 6 Egg Whites:
- Aquafaba
You know the weird juice thats in a can of chickpeas. Yip that liquid is a vegan option to egg whites and whips up just as fluffy and stiff as normal egg whites! These are absolutely great for kids with egg allergies, or if you don’t have any eggs on hand but theres a couple of cans of chickpeas in your pantry.
Two tablespoons of Aquafaba is equal to 1 egg. A normal can of chickpeas will have anywhere from 8 to 12 tablespoons of liquid in the can which means you will need about 1 can of liquid for this puff recipe. Here is a great description of how to work with Aquafaba.
How To Substitute 4Tbs Cornstarch:
The cornstarch in this recipe, and all my egg white based puff recipes, are essential in stabilizing the egg whites and making sure that they do not collapse and give you that beautiful melt-in-your-mouth texture. If using Aquafaba. you will also need to use a stabilizer to get a big fluffy texture. Here is a look at some of the best substitutes for stablizers to give you big fluffy puffs, with Aquafaba or egg whites!
- Creme Of Tartar
Creme of tartar is available in all grocery stores in the baking or spice isles. If you are not much of a baker, you might not always have this ingredient in your pantry, hence cornstarch being the easier and more readily available option but either is perfect.
- Vinegar Or lemon Juice
Personally I have never used vinegar or lemon juice to stabilize egg whites. I will have to try this out and let you know! But in as pinch this could theoretically work. If you have tried this before please let the rest of us know and leave a comment below!
- Sugar
The classic ingredient used to stabilize meringues, I would definitely not recommend using sugar for puffs for babies and toddlers, due to the obvious absolutely crazy sugar rush that is sure to follow! Well, unless you are dropping them off at an ex or a questionable mother-in-law…
When is my baby ready to start eating puffs?
Introducing solid foods to your baby is a milestone filled with excitement and perhaps a bit of trepidation. As your little one grows and develops, you may find yourself eagerly anticipating the day when tiny fingers will explore new textures and flavors. Puffs, those airy, dissolvable snacks, often become a popular choice for baby’s first foray into self-feeding. But when is the right time to introduce these delightful little bites?
- Developmental Readiness:
Sitting Independently: Before introducing puffs, ensure that your baby can sit upright without support. This indicates the development of core strength and stability, crucial for safe self-feeding.
Pincher Grasp: Watch for the emergence of the pincher grasp – the ability to pick up small objects between the thumb and forefinger. This fine motor skill is a sign that your baby is ready to handle more delicate foods.
- Chewing Motion:
Mouthing and Chewing Actions: While your baby may not have teeth yet, the ability to make chewing motions with their jaws is a key indicator of readiness. This indicates the oral motor skills needed for handling more complex textures.
- Crawling Skills:
Well-Established Crawling: Developing strong crawling skills, with the belly off the floor, is a positive sign. These skills not only indicate good body control but also contribute to oral motor skill development, essential for navigating a variety of solid foods.
- Age Range:
Around 8 to 12 Months: Most babies are ready for puffs as a snack between 8 to 12 months of age. However, it’s crucial to prioritize signs of readiness over strict adherence to a specific age range. Every baby is unique and develops at their own pace.
- Cautious Introduction:
One at a Time: When introducing puffs, offer them one at a time to observe how your baby handles this new texture. Resist the urge to feed the puff directly; instead, let your little one practice picking it up independently. This not only encourages self-feeding but also enhances fine motor skills.
- Watchful Supervision:
Always Observe: As with any new food introduction, always keep a watchful eye on your baby as they explore puffs. This ensures not only a safe feeding experience but also helps you gauge your baby’s preferences and comfort with this new snack.
In conclusion, the introduction of puffs to your baby’s diet is an exciting step in their culinary journey. By paying attention to developmental cues and embracing a patient and watchful approach, you’ll set the stage for a positive and enjoyable self-feeding experience for your little one. Always remember, every baby is unique, and their readiness to explore new foods is a beautiful and individual journey.
Storage and On-the-Go Snacking for homemade Baby Puffs
These puffs will keep fresh for about 5 days in an airtight container on the counter, but they probably wont last that long! To keep them fresh, avoid humidity and extreme temperatures. Should your puffs lose their crispiness, due to a child or yourself leaving the container open, don’t worry, simply pop them back in a low oven for a couple of minutes until they crisp up.
If you are packing baby puffs for a long trip or even just to always have in your diaper bag, don’t make the same mistake I did! Don’t put them in a plastic baggie and let them all get smooshed to dust! Get a hard Tupperware or other airtight snack container to avoid giving your kids dust for snacks (they still ate it though so whatever).

Description
These nutritious, quick and easy 4-ingredient “cheese” puffs come together with just 10 minutes (or less) hands on time! These are absolutely melt in your mouth just like the store bought ones, with none of the icky added sugars and preservatives!
Just like almost all of our recipes, these are easily customizable to whatever your baby or toddler prefers or simply what you have laying around in the corners of your crisper drawer!
Ingredients
1/2 cup cooked and pureed butternut or sweet potato
1/4 cup to 1/2 cup Nutritional Yeast flakes ( I usually do 1/4cup, but you could up the 'cheesiness" to 1/2 cup)
4 Tbsp Cornstarch
6 egg whites
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 215 F.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, or in a large bowl with an electric whisk, beat the egg whites until soft peaks start to form. Gradually add in the cornstarch 1 tablespoon at a time and whip until well combined.
Keep beating the egg whites until stiff peaks form and don’t fold over. A good way to test if your egg whites are ready is to hold your bowl upside down. If the egg whites don’t move then they are ready.
Very gently fold in your cooked and cooled pureed butternut or sweet potato and nutritional yeast. Do this as gently as possible, as you don’t want to knock out too much air in the process. *
Gently transfer to a piping bag or a Ziplock bag with the tip cut off. You can pipe these into whatever shapes you like, using a piping nozzle or not.
On a parchment paper lined baking sheet gently pipe 4 inch fingers or little dots depending on what your baby or toddler prefers.
If piping fingers place in the oven for about 2 -2 1/2 hours. Little dots will take about 1 -1 1/2 hours. Check your cheese puffs during baking to make sure they aren’t browning or burning at the bottom. Once your puffs are crispy and easily lifts off the parchment paper they are done. You can turn the oven off and leave them in there to crisp up even more as the oven cools.
Once completely cooled, store in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week.
Notes
I find the best way to mix the butternut into the egg whites without losing too much air is to first add a giant spoonful of egg whites to the butternut and mix it together without too much of a care. this ‘lightens up’ the butternut and makes the dense texture of the butternut easier to mix in gently with the rest of the egg whites.
This recipe is great to experiment with different flavor combinations. Just stick to other quit solid pureed fruits and veggies, like guava, cauliflower, broccoli or carrots. Or try our banana fingers or mint and pea puffs recipes!
